Manteno State Hospital
Manteno State Hospital, located in Manteno, Illinois, was once one of the largest psychiatric hospitals in the state. Opened in 1930, the hospital housed thousands of patients over the years, many of whom suffered from mental illness and were subjected to outdated and often cruel treatments. The hospital closed in 1985, but many believe that the spirits of former patients still haunt the abandoned buildings.
Visitors and paranormal investigators have reported seeing shadowy figures, hearing disembodied voices, and experiencing cold spots throughout the hospital’s decaying halls. The most active areas are said to be the former patient wards and the old morgue, where many have felt a strong, oppressive presence. Paranormal investigators have captured EVP recordings and strange light anomalies, further adding to the belief that the hospital is haunted. Manteno State Hospital’s combination of tragic history and ghostly encounters makes it a chilling destination for those interested in haunted asylums.
